PRESS RELEASE – May 2, 2021

The Heritage Foundation’s Youth Support Program for Unhoused Children

No child should go to bed cold or hungry. Yet, it is estimated that there are over 400,000 children in the foster system and group home environments annually.

Though federally funded programs try to provide what a child needs, there are many that still fall through the cracks, often lacking essential items and resources, such as education, healthcare, clothing, books, etc. At the Heritage Foundation, we are actively working with community organizers to raise funds for children’s homes throughout the United States.

By contributing to our Youth Support Program, your funds will directly buy:

  • Meals and vitamins for children in group homes
  • Book and learning materials for immigrant children in temporary housing
  • Hygiene products for children in homeless shelters with their families
  • Local Club Sport sponsorship

A vast majority of children with unstable home environments have difficulty advancing in school, and later on securing a job. Many turn to a life of crime to support themselves. In addition, the psychological effects on children lacking necessary resources are often long-term and include:

  • Having aggressive behavior
  • Poor communication skills
  • Anxiety and/or depression

Providing essentials, like shoes or a new winter coat, help children feel a semblance of normalcy in an otherwise scary or confusing environment.

Numerous studies have shown that overall, communities that are unable to support children from broken homes fall behind places with the resources to do so. By supporting these children, you are directly supporting your community and helping our society grow.
